5 Tips for Growing Your Social Media Presence

Social media is an ever growing, ever changing platform for anyone out there with an internet connection making it one of the most powerful tools for a designer to get their name out there. However, navigating it can sometimes be hard and creating a large, interactive following can seem impossible. But here are 5 awesome tips to chase that feeling away and grow your social media presence:

  1. Post similar content within your feed to create a brand if who you are. Have a purpose for each and every post.
  2. Follow similar accounts who have similar interests and content as you do. Build and interact with this community as much and as often as you can!
  3. Be sure to use hashtags on all of your posts! The maximum number of hashtags you can have on a post is 30, try to stick to 20 or less. Be very specific on your hashtags, using only hashtags that have 500k or less posts.
  4. Know when to post. Study your analytics to determine the best time to post, according to when your followers are most likely to see your post.
  5. Reply to comments within your post as soon as you can. Interact with your viewers!

Inspo: Stefan Kunz

Lettering was my gateway into graphic design. I started out making greeting cards, home decor, and wedding signage before deciding on majoring in Media Design in college. Naturally, I follow 30+ lettering artists on social media platforms, such as Instagram, with their skills and popularity ranging from beginner to expert. One of my absolute favorite lettering artists is Stefan Kunz, master of chalk art and tablet lettering. Check out his work here or look at some of my favorites below!

FIVE FAVS: Apps for Designers Edition

Apps for Designers Edition:

From their website: “Procreate is a multi-award winning painting app designed for creative professionals. Made exclusively for iPad, Procreate allows you to create beautiful sketches, inspiring paintings, and stunning illustrations wherever you are.”

Procreate is amazing. Hands-down the most user-friendly drawing app out there, with insane features. Procreate comes loaded with about 50 brushes, but the cool thing is that you can download brush packets from other designers, and even make your own! I personally use Procreate for lettering more than actual drawing, but I have been some amazing artwork from others, so I’m sure it does what it says. I would say procreate is 100% worth the $9.99 price tag.

From their website: “Skillshare is an online learning community with thousands of classes in design, business, tech and more. Anyone can join the millions of members in our community to learn cutting-edge skills, network with peers, and discover new opportunities.” Skillshare is both an app and a website, which makes it super convenient to access it on any device. Major perk! I love Skillshare because there are SO many classes you can take, on SO many topics. From learning animation, watercolor, hand-lettering, adobe software, etc to businesses classes like marketing, branding, price-points, to networking with other artists – Skillshare has it all!

Adobe Capture

From their website: “User your mobile device to turn photos into color themes, patterns, type, materials, brushed, and shapes. Then bring those assets into your favorite desktop and mobile apps – including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Dimension, XD, and Photoshop Sketch – to use them in all your creative projects.”

With Adobe Capture, you use your camera to do so many things. Like using a digital kaleidoscope to make geometric patterns, distinguishing type similar to some you see in the real world around you, create custom brushes, turn hand-drawn shapes and high-contrast photos into a clean vector shape, and even make you custom color themes. I mainly use this app to make color schemes from objects that inspire me. But, I think the coolest feature is turning your drawings into vector shapes!

From their website: “Instagram is a simple way to capture and share the world’s moments. Follow your friends and family to see what they’re up to, and discover accounts from all over the world that are sharing things you love. Join the community of over 500 million people and express yourself by sharing all the moments of your day––the highlights and everything in between, too.”

I’m sure at this point, Instagram isn’t something new. But, it still reigns as the best way to share your work with peers and potential clients. Some cool features for designers: Instagram now allows the viewer to shop a photo, which means people can buy your artwork straight from a post! Another cool feature is that you can make your Instagram a business page, allowing you promote images that you post, which in turn gets you a larger following!

Adobe Illustrator Draw

From their website: “Create beautiful free-form vector designs on your mobile device with Illustrator Draw, the app that lets you turn your ideas into production-quality artwork wherever inspiration strikes.”

Adobe Illustrator Draw feels similar to Procreate, to me. I personally like Procreate better for hand lettering, so I think. Adobe Illustrator is best for drawing pictures. So if you’re a sketch artist, this is definitely the app for you!
